Should you drink milk everyday?

It's delicious in our morning coffee, essential for cereal, and often pops up on recipe ingredient lists. Hello, milk! But, should you drink milk every day? In short, yes. We turned to the experts at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to learn how much milk we should consume daily and how it benefits our bodies.

How Much Milk Should Children Drink?

As kids grow up, their milk intake should increase over the years. Why? Milk helps them to build strong teeth and bones thanks to the abundant calcium, potassium, vitamins D, and protein found in the popular beverage. According to the USDA, 1 cup is equal to 1 cup of milk, yogurt, or a 1 1/2 ounce measurement of cheese.


Toddlers ages 12 to 23 months should enjoy 1 2/3 to 2 cups of milk each day. When they turn two, the amount increases to 2 to 2 1/2 cups per day. At age 4 until age 8, 2 1/2 cups per day is best. Once a child reaches age 9, they should consume 3 cups each day until they reach the age of 18. 

Do Adults Need to Drink Milk?

As we get older, it's a good idea to keep milk as part of our routine meal planning. Remember that teeth and bone growth we mentioned for children? Milk can help adults maintain the integrity and strength of teeth and bones by preventing the onset of osteoporosis, a disease that leads to weakened bones. 


Men and women ages 19 to 60+ years should consume 3 cups of milk each day. However, if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or have an ongoing medical condition, it's best to consult your family physician for guidance. They may recommend more or less milk for you based on your current medications, dietary needs, and health conditions.

Additional Ways to Consume Milk 

If you can tolerate dairy products beyond a2 Milk®, such as yogurt, low-fat cheese, or ice cream, feel free to consume those in moderation as part of your daily milk intake.
