5 things you didn't know about milk

By now, you know that milk does a body good. And a2 Milk® is here to keep your body and your traditions going. We’re sure you’ve shown off more milk mustaches than you could count by age 7. You probably became a shrewd negotiator trading for your best friend’s milk (because you just had to have an extra). And at one point in your life, we’ll bet you made a bowl of cereal just to drink the milky goodness after you were done.

Let’s face it. Milk has been a considerable part of your life, and in many ways, it quite literally grew you into the person you are today. So, you probably know everything there is to know about milk. Right?

Not even close.

In fact, there’s so much you don’t know about milk it’s not even funny. Here are five things you don’t know about milk (and a lil’ extra) that will blow your mind.

1. Americans Really, REALLY Like Milk

It may not shock you that Americans love their milk, but you probably never put a number to it. The shocking fact is the average American drinks 18 gallons of milk per year. That’s about the size of a modern sedan’s gas tank. Whether its in homemade Creme brulee lattes, yummy Homemade yogurt with fruit on the bottom, or Creamy holiday eggnog, milk is a family staple.

Perhaps scientists might research how to make a car run on milk if they weren’t worried that Americans would just drink it all.

2. Cow’s Milk Isn’t Actually White

Who says a glass of milk can’t help hydrate? In fact, at 87% water, cow’s milk is largely H20, while the rest is a mixture of protein and fat. It’s the reflection of light on these fat and protein molecules that give milk its white color.

Speaking of color, did you know cheese isn’t the bright orangy-yellowy color we’ve come to know and love? Nope. Cheese is usually white (the color of milk), off-white, or golden yellow. Like ricotta cheese for example. Annatto seeds from a lesser-known tropical fruit are added to make it darker.

And speaking of cheese, did you know the world’s rarest cheese comes from donkey milk? We’ll let you try that one.

3. Adding Salt Makes Milk Last Longer

a2 MilkⓇ goes through an ultra-pasteurization process that keeps milk fresher longer in your refrigerator. Our milk is heated for a short time, just long enough to kill bacteria that would cause milk to spoil.

So you can add salt if you want but we’ve done the hard work for you. Don’t go crazy though, or else you’ll find yourself practicing your sour lemon face one spoonful at a time. Just a pinch per carton will help it last one week longer than the expiration date.

Adding salt sound too wild? Baking soda will get the job done too.

4. Chocolate Milk Is Great Post-Workout Recovery Fuel

If you want to look like The Rock, our upcoming Hershey’s a2 Milk® Chocolate is a perfect first step. Recovery is an essential part of fitness that most people miss. A tall glass of chocolate milk can replenish vital nutrients that you lose during a gym session, in addition to helping you rehydrate and build muscle.

Milk is packed with 8g of protein per 8oz glass. But there are different kinds of protein. You see, most cows produce A1 and A2 protein, which is the majority of the milk you’ll find in stores. Published research has shown that milk with the A2 protein may be easier on digestion.

So because milk is a beloved staple of our family, we use milk from cows that naturally produce the A2 protein. The result is happy faces, happier bellies and an a2 Milk® difference you can taste.

5.  No Bull -- Cows Have Super Powers

Yes, the cows that produce milk are also heroes in their own right. These cows have panoramic vision when they graze. This virtually 360-degree vision helps them to avoid predators and sneaky cow tippers.

Combined with the fact that cows can smell up to 6 miles away, you have yourself a loyal, 1,200 lb side-kick. Up until 1850, every family had their own cow. With these kind of powers, man’s best friend might one day be man’s best bovine.

With facts this awesome, drinking milk is bound to put a smile on your face. Just like a2 MilkⓇ. You get the great taste and milk-fueled nostalgia you love that's easier on your tummy. But you don’t have to take our word for it! Try any a2 Milk® product in your favorite recipes and enjoy the difference for yourself. Find a2 MilkⓇ near you by using our Store Finder.
