Reasons Why You Should Be Drinking Milk

Posted on October 1, 2018

Dairy gets a bad rap. As a registered dietitian, I have countless clients who have sworn it off completely either because they do not believe it is healthy or because they have a sensitivity.

The truth is, dairy is one of the most nutrient dense foods and one of the richest sources of calcium, which is necessary for keeping bones and teeth strong.  Whether you suspect you are milk sensitive or not, here’s why you should embrace dairy again.

Dairy – A Nutrient Powerhouse!

We all know that milk is good for our bones but it provides so much more than that. It’s naturally packed full of essential vitamins and minerals and is a complete source of protein and a natural source of energy. One cup of milk provides 30% of your daily calcium along with phosphorous, riboflavin, vitamin B12 and potassium.

Ever heard of the sunshine vitamin? Research shows that most Americans don’t get enough and milk is one of the only reliable food sources. Vitamin D aids your body in absorbing calcium and phosphorous, necessary to keep bones and teeth strong.

Last but not least, milk is one of the most affordable complete sources of protein. Protein helps keep you satiated at mealtime and can aid weight management. It is also important for immunity plus building and repairing muscles.

Suspect you may be milk sensitive? Think again.

Ordinary cow’s milk naturally contains two proteins – A1 and A2. a2 Milk® comes from cows that naturally produce only the A2 protein and no A1.  Published research suggests that a2 Milk® may help some people avoid discomfort. a2 Milk® is 100% real milk with all the same great nutrition as other cows’ milk,  but it naturally contains only the A2 protein type (A1 protein free), which may help some people avoid discomfort from milk. As a result, some people with dairy sensitivities may be given the opportunity to enjoy real dairy milk again.
